Reducing Cost and
Complexity in Oklahoma

An operator was completing wells in the Anadarko Basin in Oklahoma using a hybrid treatment schedule. The treatment began with a slickwater fluid system using a conventional friction reducer and moved to a 20lb linear gel with a high concentration of proppant at the middle of the process to completion. However, the operator decided to adapt the slickwater designs and utilize ThinFrac™ MP to simplify operations and reduce costs.

SOLUTION

  • ThinFrac MP was deployed on a three-well pad with 75 stages, and a two-well pad with 100 stages
  • Each operation was pumped at 80 bpm
  • The enhanced polymer was run at half the loading (0.5 gpt)

RESULTS

  • Generated 3% and 6% savings in chemicals costs, respectively
  • Reduced logistics for fewer chemicals on location and less transfer issues that can cause delays, screenouts or not pumping the stage as designed

Minimizing NPT in the
Marcellus Shale

An operator in the Marcellus Shale region was conducting horizontal, multistage fracturing completions and experiencing non-productive time, shutdowns and screenouts due to reservoir properties that were difficult to break down, along with higher surface treating pressures. This slickwater fracturing operation required an additional linear gel to achieve the extra viscosity needed to effectively place the proppant.

SOLUTION

  • ThinFrac MP’s capabilities and ability to act as a linear fluid viscosifier easily attained the additional viscosity needed and effectively placed the proppant across the problem stages
  • A breaker was also run to minimize formation damage and enhance regained permeability to greater than 95%

RESULTS

  • Minimized delays or shutdowns by transforming a conventional friction reducer to a linear fluid viscosifer
  • Prevented screenouts by adding instantaneous viscosity
  • Reduced costs associated with additional chemicals, deployment of a hydration unit and extra equipment operators

An operator in the Eagle Ford Shale was performing multistage, horizontal fracturing operations and required a product that would deliver higher regain permeabilities to enhance production.

SOLUTION

  • Seven wells were pumped with ThinFrac MP, ranging in depths from 8,400-14,5000 ft (2560-4419 m) and lateral lengths averaging 4,000 ft (1219 m)
  • Four gallons per thousand (gpt) of ThinFrac MP fluid was injected into the blender with additives and proppant
  • W20 offset wells were pumped with high-proppant concentrations using a hybrid fluid system
  • Each of the wells were completed similarly with 5½-in (14-cm) casing and fractured in 14 to 17 stages using the plug-and-perf method

RESULTS

  • 30-70% production improvement on the wells using ThinFrac MP compared with direct offsets
  • ThinFrac MP wells showed equal effectiveness to the offsets in preventing abrasive wear and proppant settling – extending the pump life and eliminating costly shutdowns and maintenance between stages

Enhancing Operational
Efficiency in
Western Canada

An operator pumping an unconventional reservoir in the Viking formation in Western Canada saw higher surface treating pressures than expected. BJ Services engineers recommended using ThinFrac MP as an effective alternative to conventional friction reducers.

SOLUTION

  • 50 m3 of ThinFrac MP was pumped at 1.5 L/m3, which reduced friction and surface treating pressure by 15 MPa at a 17 m3/min pump rate.
  • Treating pressure also dropped to 70 MPa, or a reduction of 4250 kW.
  • When the technology reached the formation, the surface treating pressure increased back to 85 MPa. This resulted in the operator keeping the pumping ratio at 1.5 L/m3 of ThinFrac MP for the rest of the treatment.

RESULTS

  • The operator saw a decrease in total completion time by several days and an estimated cost savings of $600,000.
  • In addition, the operator continued using the recommended amount of ThinFrac MP and pumping ratio for all other stimulations in this well.
